President Donald Trump on Tuesday said the U.S. Navy informed him that all mines had been removed or detonated from international waters in the Strait of Hormuz, while warning Iran that any vessel caught laying new ones would be “immediately and systematically destroyed.”

“I have just been informed by the United States Navy that all mines have been removed and/or detonated from within the International Waters of the Strait of Hormuz,” Trump wrote on Truth Social. “Iran has been notified that any ship or boat placing new mines will be immediately and systematically destroyed.”

Trump said the U.S. has a “zero tolerance” policy on mine placement and is using Space Force to monitor “every square inch” of the strategic waterway.

His announcement comes as commercial vessels continue to face danger in the strait.

Last Tuesday, a bulk carrier attempting to leave the Strait of Hormuz was struck by an unidentified projectile, resulting in one casualty and damage to its engine room, according to the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations. It was the eighth vessel attack in the strait reported by UKMTO this month.

The Strait of Hormuz is a critical route for global energy shipments. Oil transits through the waterway were about 5 million barrels per day on Monday, down from more than 20 million barrels per day before the war, according to provisional Vortexa data cited by Reuters.

Trump has also repeatedly said he wants to declare the Strait of Hormuz U.S. territory after the war ends, though he has not explained how the United States would claim the international waterway.
