“Today I am pleased to announce that the last American forces are leaving Iraq! It has been a very long time, and very bad decisions led us to become involved in this quagmire, but soon this will become part of history. This is a Great Day for America, and, importantly, we are leaving Iraq with a wonderful new Prime Minister, Ali al-Zaidi, whom I supported from the very beginning and fully endorsed. He won an election in which he was not expected to emerge victorious, and he did so by a huge margin!” the post said.
According to Trump, the Iraq operation known as “Operation Inherent Resolve,” which began in 2003 under the administration of George W. Bush and continued under the administrations of Barack Obama and Joe Biden, will end in 2026 under his leadership. Trump called the complete withdrawal of the military contingent from Iraq a victory for the United States and his administration, as well as an indication of the defeat of ISIS, which was “completely destroyed” by the US military.
“This orderly withdrawal of coalition forces and equipment from Erbil Air Base marks the end of a very costly excursion into HELL. I had a choice — stay or leave — and I felt, without any doubt, that it was time for Americans to come home! Prime Minister al-Zaidi is outstanding, and I hope he will be able to handle things very well. We came to fight the caliphate. There is no longer a caliphate. We are coming home!” Trump concluded.
The US military officially completed its withdrawal from Iraq on September 30, 2026, ending its military presence there as part of the mission against ISIS.
