Armenia\u2019s Anti-Corruption Committee confirmed the detention of the country\u2019s second president, Robert Kocharyan, and his elder son, Sedrak Kocharyan. The detentions took place on August 25 as part of a criminal investigation into alleged corruption offenses.<\/p>\n
On the morning of August 25, law enforcement officers conducted searches and other procedural actions at several dozen locations linked to Robert Kocharyan and members of his family. Investigative actions were also carried out at the home of his younger son, Levon Kocharyan, a member of the National Assembly representing the opposition Armenia bloc.<\/p>\n
According to Armenian media reports, investigative activities were also conducted at the Orange Fitness sports club, the Play City entertainment center, and the apartments of the managers of these establishments. Investigative actions were also reportedly carried out at Toyota\u2019s Yerevan office. The Anti-Corruption Committee has not yet disclosed which specific criminal case is at the center of the investigation or what specific charges have been brought against the Kocharyans.<\/p>\n
Initially, it was reported that Robert Kocharyan had been taken to the National Security Service and later to the Anti-Corruption Committee. The agency subsequently confirmed that Kocharyan and his elder son, Sedrak, had been detained.<\/p>\n
The previous day, August 24, a verbal confrontation took place in parliament between Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and MP Levon Kocharyan. Pashinyan said that the origins of the Kocharyan family\u2019s wealth should be investigated and stated that property allegedly acquired illegally should be returned to the state. Levon Kocharyan responded that such matters should be decided by a court, not by the head of government.<\/p>\n
Robert Kocharyan served as President of Armenia from 1998 to 2008. Before that, from 1997 to 1998, he served as Prime Minister of Armenia.
