A series of alleged assassination plots targeting Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdo\u011fan were reportedly being prepared in 2016, including one modeled after the 1981 assassination of Egyptian President Anwar Sadat. This was stated by retired Turkish Brigadier General \u0130brahim B\u00fcy\u00fckba\u015f, according to the newspaper Yeni Akit.<\/p>\n
According to the general, one of the assassination attempts was supposed to take place during military exercises shortly before the failed coup attempt on July 15, 2016. However, the exercise was canceled after “suspicious activity” by supporters of the organization known as FET\u00d6, which is banned in Turkey, was detected. It was later alleged that the conspirators had planned to assassinate the Turkish president in a manner similar to Sadat’s killing during a military parade in Cairo.<\/p>\n
B\u00fcy\u00fckba\u015f also described other alleged plots against Erdo\u011fan. In the spring of 2015, he claimed that the conspirators planned to stage an aircraft crash. According to his account, the operation involved a foreign aircraft, and following the crash, Erdo\u011fan was to be accused of attempting to flee the country with millions of dollars that had allegedly been prepared in advance.<\/p>\n
Another alleged plot reportedly involved a hotel in the Turkish resort town of Marmaris. The general claimed that three months before the coup attempt, the conspirators intended to capture the president there, take him to Dalaman Airport, and kill him aboard an aircraft operated by a foreign airline. The investigation materials reportedly mention a plane belonging to the Swiss company Albinati Aeronautics, which requested permission for an urgent departure shortly before Erdo\u011fan’s arrival and canceled the flight after he had left. Turkish authorities have not commented on the retired general’s claims.<\/p>\n
On the night of July 15, 2016, Turkey experienced an attempted military coup that left around 250 people dead.
